Kitten Wellness Program

The table below explains our comprehensive preventative healthcare program for your kitten.

First Visit:
Reason
  • ideally seen at about eight weeks of age
  • This is when kittens first leave their mother and are old enough for their first set of vaccines.
  • complete physical exam
  • To check for any current health problems.
  • FELV/FIV blood test
  • To make sure that your kitten is not carrying these incurable viruses. Kittens that appear healthy can still be infected.
  • deworm for roundworms
  • To eliminate any roundworms that may have been transmitted from their mother.
  • discuss early training methods
  • To prevent behavior problems.
  • discuss diet
  • Getting onto a good diet is very important to ensure proper growth.
  • discuss pet health insurance
  • Because you never know when an accident or illness could occur.
  • give 1st in series of vaccines
  • To prevent disease. Kittens will receive vaccines that are appropriate for their lifestyle.
Second Visit:
Reason
  • about 4 weeks after the 1st visit
  • this is when the second vaccine in the series needs to be given
  • complete physical exam
  • To make sure no problems have arisen and that your kitten is developing normally.
  • fecal check
  • Stool is examined under a microscope to screen for intestinal parasites such as giardia and coccidia.
  • discuss behavior
  • To address any behaviour concerns that may have developed since the first visit.
  • discuss future care
  • To explain the importance of identification, dental care, and procedures for spaying and neutering.
  • give 2nd vaccines in series
  • To boost immunity. Vaccines need to be boosted one year later, then intervals will be determined at the wellness exams each year.

Third Visit:

Reason:

  • at about 6 months of age
  • Should be done before cats go into heat for the first time or begin spraying.
  • ovariohysterectomy(spay)females or
  • castration(neuter)-males
  • To prevent unwanted kittens and the behavioural problems associated with intact cats.
  • place permanent identification (tattoo or microchip)
  • To help ensure your cat is returned to you if they are ever lost. (Collars come off, and cats can't tell you their phone number!)
  • start on Tartar Diet Food (T/D™)
  • Because dental health is very important. Most adult teeth have just finished emerging at 6 months of age and are shiny and white. We want to keep them this way.
